National Academy for AI Instruction (NAfAI)
A US initiative providing AI training and curriculum to educators, launched July 2025 by the American Federation of Teachers with the United Federation of Teachers, lead partner Microsoft, founding partner OpenAI and Anthropic — a $23 million programme based at a Manhattan facility, offering free training to the AFT's 1.8 million members starting with K-12 educators (AFT launch release, 2025-07-08).
The Academy is not itself a standards body, but it is the contracting party behind one instrument that functions as a standard: the AI Safety & Privacy Standard for Schools, the Memorandum of Agreement it requires of any AI Provider engaged to serve its educators and students, and which signatories undertake to extend to any US school district that asks.
Applicability to EdTech
Two distinct routes. A vendor engaged by the Academy itself signs the MOA. Far more commonly, a school district asks a vendor for "the AFT/Microsoft AI standard" in its own contract — a request the Standard is expressly drafted to enable, in the district's existing DPA or an addendum rather than in the Standard's own form. The Standard's own scope is narrower than the announcement suggests: it reaches only generative-AI products primarily designed and marketed for education, not general-purpose productivity or cloud services licensed by a school.
