California — Ed. Code §49076.7 (pupil SSN collection ban)

Districts, county offices of education and charter schools must not collect or solicit social security numbers (or their last four digits) of pupils or their parents/guardians unless federal law requires it — with authority for the department to prohibit further identifiers.

Applicability to EdTech

A data-catalogue constraint: a platform serving California schools should have no SSN fields in any school-facing flow — schools cannot lawfully supply them, and asking is a red flag in district reviews.
