Student Privacy Pledge (retired)
A voluntary industry commitment created in 2014 by the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software and Information Industry Association: signatory companies made public, legally enforceable commitments ("a dozen privacy commitments regarding the collection, maintenance, use, and sharing of student personal information").
Retired: per FPF, "As of April 25, 2025, the Future of Privacy Forum has retired the Student Privacy Pledge previously hosted at studentprivacypledge.org" (fpf.org/student-privacy-pledge). FPF's stated rationale is that 40+ states have enacted student privacy laws that codify or exceed the Pledge's requirements. Former signatories remain bound by their commitments for data collected during their signatory period; FPF maintained the public signatory list until 2025-07-31.
Applicability to EdTech
Kept for the historical record: RFIs and older procurement checklists still reference the Pledge. The accurate answer is that the Pledge was retired in April 2025 and its substance now lives in state law (e.g. SOPIPA) and standard contract instruments (the NDPA).
